my friend got mad at me for having the style for all of the posts on here just defined as part of the divs of the posts with basically just using style="padding:40px;border:solid #3483eb 2px;width:65%;font-family:arial;background:#d5eb34;color:#32848f so now i've changed it to just use a class which is a lot less fun i think
#the fun thing about html is being able to just have everything suck and it still working

imagine like, a normal guy named tod or something and he's just like, a very typical guy; he goes to the same coffee shop all the time and orders "the usual". overall just a very ordinary fellow, BUT he has a fucked up evil counterpart named EVIL tod who goes to the coffee shop and orders "the unusual" and nobody at the coffee shop knows what that means, so they just mix a bunch of stuff together in a cup, and that seems to work for him. eventually once evil tod comes back a few times the people working at that coffee shop just all know that that's what they do when evil tod comes by and orders "the unusual"; they just mix a bunch of stuff together in a cup.
and evil tod just keeps coming back and getting his unusual, and like, at that point he's basically just doing the same thing that normal tod does; just going to the coffe shop all the time and ordering the same thing each time. he still calls it "the unusual", but "the unusual" is what he usually orders.
anyway at some point tod and evil tod are at the coffee shop at the same time and the coffee shop people are very confused to realize that the tods were not actually the same person and cofusion and hilarity ensue or whatever
#also evil tod isn't actually evil, but i thought that "evil tod" was a funnier thing to call him than like, "weird tod" or something like that

i'm really happy with how the dice turned out! i'm considering making a d20 as well, but i'm not sure i want to deal with positioning that many things into a shape
#although i could probably reuse the code i did for rolling the die i think that that would still work the same
#but i wouldn't expect me to make a d20 (at least not any time soon)
#also i don't know how to make triangles in html, so that would be another barrier to makeing a d20

it's really cool how whenever i have an idea for something to add to this site i can just look online and just like use a bunch of tutorials on how to do html stuff and put a bunch of stuff together and it just works. it's great. just don't ever look at how awful my code looks :3

continuing the previous post, now i'm talking about queerness within romhacks of mario games rather than just talking about the stuff that nintendo wants you to know about
what is a romhacka romhack is a modified version of a video game that can change the game's graphics, levels, gameplay, or really anything else you can think of. i have a few romhacks that i want to highlight here because i think that they're cool and also because gay. this is by no means an all inclusive list, just some ones that i have thought of as i wrote this
nightmare mario wii
nightmare mario wii is a romhack by Mayro which is designed to be as annoying to play as possible. one of the levels in this hack is 2-tower, otherwise known as the roy koopa dating sim. in this level, mario goes on a date with roy koopa. it's very romantic and has eight endings depending on where you go in the dialogue tree, ranging from having a good date with roy, to him breaking up with you, to him killing you, to mario giving birth to roy's child, to mario being caught cheating. it's definitely one of the funniest mario levels i've played. this hack is really cool if you want to play it (although it does succeed at being unfun, but like, in a cool way that's still engaging to play), however, even if you don't want to play it, i would definitely recommend watching the
dev showcase, because it's really cool and entertaining
mario's really hard quest to complete the really hard quest
this one probably shouldn't be on here, because it's not particularly queer outside of the fact that i made it, but yeah, it doesn't really have queerness outside of a few small jokes that i made in a few places, but i did want to mention it
trans liberation forever
trans liberation forever by MarsAmPear is a really difficult precision hack that i tried playing and gave up on because i suck at precision, but from what i've heard it has really good, well made precision level design. and obviously it has very transgender theming
~sure shot~ ft. sonic the hedgehog
~sure shot~ is an kaizo intermediate hack by Maddy
* and Margot. it's a really fun hack and is quite a bit more approachable than a lot of other kaizo hacks (although i would still recommend playing some easier stuff before trying it). the most queer level is the final b-side level, trans fights are human fights, but the whole hack feels very trans. i don't really know how to explain what i mean by that, but like, a lot of kaizo feels very transgender to me idk. also this hack is kind of the sequel to the next (and final) hack on this list
super "sonic saves the world" world
super "sonic saves the world" world is a kaizo expert hack by Maddy. it's designed as a collection of short stories, with most of its levels being disconnected to each of the others. i'm only going to talk about a few levels here, but you should definitely either play the game or at least like, watch a letsplay of it or something.
the first level i want to talk about here is "your pal ted". this level has a gay character, ted, who dies about halfway through the level and then we spend the rest of the level platforming off of ted's corpse as he descends to hell.
the next level i want to talk about is "celeste (2018)". this level retels the video game celeste as a stage play where the role of madeline is played by sonic and most of the other roles are played by goomba. it's a cool level and also you should play celeste if you haven't it's really cool.
i also want to mention the level "in this house". at the end of the level there are two doors and a sign that says "Transphobes, continue through the door on the left. Non-transphobes, use the door on the right" and then you get to finish the level if you go to the right and presumably die or something (i didn't actually test the left door).
the final level i want to talk about is "float like a princess". in this level a recurring character, our hero -Max Blaster- who previously escaped an earth ravaged by climate change and later he also killed elon musk, has a dream where she is our heroine -Moxy Blaster-. text boxes in the level describe her as "rethinking her gender identity" and as a "L E S B I A N". towards the end of the level is a boss fight with birdo (who you might remember from yesterday's post) who is actually definitively transgender in this game and after that the dream ends and our hero -Max Blaster- says "ah, that was such a nice fantasy ♥ I wish that I could be a girl... I'm definitely still cis tho, of course"
anyway super "sonic saves the world" world is awesome
conclusion
uh yeah, there's a lot of really cool romhacks and in addition to just being a really cool medium to work with, it also gives people the opportunity to put queer people into more games which is always really cool. there's probably like a billion more that i didn't mention that would have also worked well on this list, but these are just some that i am either familliar with or in the case of trans liberation forever, that one of my friends recommended i put on the list. i will say again that a lot of these hacks are very difficult, but they aren't so difficult that you can never play them. (i would recommend playing some easier hacks first though (love yourself is a really good kaizo beginner hack of super mario world that i liked a lot and would definitely recommend, but i'm sure you can also find some stuff that would work for you)). anyway yeah, thanks for bearing with me through this rambly mess. i hope you enjoyed or at least didn't hate it :3

#one thing with this that doesn't work as well in this format was that with the slideshow i was using the template that everyone uses for SAGA meetings, but halfway through i completely inverted the color palette and started talking about romhacking, which was not something that i had said that i was going to do
#which the inverted colors in this post is a reference to, but it definitely doesn't have the same impact as it did when this was a slideshow.
#otherwise though i'm pretty happy with how this turned out. it feels like a pretty good adaptation

(this post is an adapted version of a presentation that i gave at my school's Sexuality And Gender Alliance about half a year ago)queerness in super mario
super mario is a series of video games developed by nintendo. they (usually) feature an italian plumber named super mario, his brother, luigi mario, 2d (or 3d (ewww)) platforming, and also queer people but not very often
queer characters in super mario(there's kind of only two of them)
birdo
birdo
* was introduced in super mario bros. 2 in 1988. the game's manual says "he thinks he is a girl and he spits eggs from his mouth." other official sources have referred to her as a woman, as a "creature of indeterminate gender," or as a man that people think is a woman. in modern games and marketing, she is referred to as a woman. all of this seems like nintendo was trying to make her a trans woman and also was being very transphobic about the whole thing. i think that it's kind of cool how (one of) the first trans character in gaming came from the super mario series of all things, but i definitely don't think that nintendo has done a very good job here (i still love birdo though)
vivian
vivian was introduced in paper mario: the thousand year door in 2004. she is one of the three shadows, although she eventually leaves them and joins mario's party. in the original japanese release of the game, she was depicted as a trans woman, was generally referred to as a man, and faced she faced transphobia from the other two shadows, however in the original english localization, that was removed and instead of transphobia she was made fun of for being ugly. in the 2024 nintendo switch remake of the thousand year door, vivian is depicted as transgender even in the english localization and she is no longer referred to as a man.
a few more that are definitely a bit of a stretch
- on the japanese promotional website for mario kart double dash, part of the description for birdo translates to saying that she "appears to be yoshi's girlfriend, but is actually his boyriend," but i feel like this is less about yoshi being gay than it is just more of nintendo being transphobic about birdo
- kamek is shown wearing a princess peach dress in both new super mario bros. wii and the super mario bros. movie
- there are many species across the mario universe that don't really have defined genders (which also kind of includes toads and yoshis but also not really. it's confusing)
- the description of the super crown power-up, which transforms toadette into a form that is basically just princess peach with some toadette elements says "Sorry Luigi - only Toadette can use this item!", and i've seen some people saying that this implies that luigi is trans
- mayor devotegetter from mario is missing is a woman in the MS-DOS version of mario is missing and a man in the CD-ROM deluxe version. mariowiki seems to think that these two people who are very clearly two different people are the same person and refers to them using they/them pronouns, which i just think is really funny and also cool
conclusion
uh yeah, nintendo generally doesn't do a very good job at putting queer people into their games. there were only two real examples of queer characters and nintendo has generally been pretty transphobic with how they have handled birdo. also, as far as i could tell there weren't any gay people (unless we count the yoshi-birdo thing), only trans people, which i feel like is kind of surprising
HOWEVER
just because nintendo doesn't put queer people in mario games doesn't mean that fans don't put queer people into mario games. come back tomorrow for PART 2 of this post where i talk about romhacking and stuff.

i think that it would be kind of cool if we didn't have standardized spelling, because i think it would be really cool to see people's accents manifest in the way that they write. you also would be able to tell whether someone's an annoying nerd if they use þorn or someþing like that in þeir spelling, which is also cool and is also somewhat useful information to have about someone

4th of july sometimes feels like it was specifically designed to be my least favourite holiday. like, there's the unhealthy amount of USAmerican patriotism, which is already annoying, but then they were like, ok, now lets also add bright flashing lights and incredibly loud noises and put it in the middle of the summer.

summer is cool because it means that i actually have time to read and play video games and stuff, but it also means that because i am reading and playing video games so much i keep finishing books way faster than i would like to. like, i want to be able to slow down and savor the flavor and actually enjoy reading things, but i just have so much time that i inevitable end up reading for like four hours in a row and being halfway done with a book in like two or three days. i'm not running through video games quite as fast, but like, if any one has any book suggestions, you can also put those in the question box form thingy it doesn't have to just be questions.
